Wheel Alignment

What is Wheel Alignment?

Wheel alignment or wheel tracking as some call it is an essential maintenance procedure to prevent early wear on your tyres. It refers to the position and angle your tyres are in its current state. Your tyres want to be at a 90° to the road, allowing for an even distribution of weight across the tyre. There are two types of wrong angles;

Negative toe, or toe out, is the front of the wheel pointing away from the centerline of the vehicle. Positive toe, or toe in, is the front of the wheel pointing towards the centerline of the vehicle. Toe can be measured in linear units, at the front of the tire, or as an angular deflection.

Dangers of poor wheel alignment

Correct wheel alignment is very important for a vehicle to drive efficiently and safely. When wheels aren’t properly aligned, it can increase the risk of tyre damage which leads to an increase in road accidents. There are some noticeable signs that could indicate a misalignment. Here are some common signs that you are dealing with wheels with poor alignment:

  • Vehicle pulling to the left or right
  • Uneven wear on one or both edge of tyre’s
  • Your steering wheel is crooked when driving straight
  • Squealing tyre’s

Common causes of disrupting a wheels alignment include hitting a curb, driving over potholes or hitting something in the road. These are all very common things drivers can experience and misaligned wheels can lead to further issues and costs. Ignoring the issue altogether can lead to added strain on the suspension which can be a very heavy cost.
